The Katherine Region consists of an area of 600,000 km2 from bushland in the north east almost from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the arid zone in the south west bordering the Western Australia border. It is an area of extremes, with a long Dry season for much of the year and a monsoonal Wet season making access to remote communities difficult.
Population is sparse and communities have predominantly Aboriginal populations away from the main centres of Katherine and Pine Creek.

There are approximately 15 Aboriginal communities with inhabitants speaking up to 32 traditional languages as well as the new Aboriginal language, Kriol.
