Diwurrwurru-jaru has actively sought to work in cooperation with a wide array of interested parties in order to encourage community consultation on research involving Aboriginal languages of the region. The organisation offers linguistic and other research experts, equipment, community liaison etc to assist projects that further work in the targeted areas. It has also conducted a successful program of supporting student research and work experience over many years. Collaborative projects that have matched community needs with personal skills and funds available through external sources has allowed the organisation to proceed with significant work in spite of the paucity of specific funding for language maintenance work in the Katherine Region. Examples of collaborative projects & activities: * NT Health: Participation in the revision of Kimberley Language Scales
to provide a linguistically appropriate language assessment tool for
young Aboriginal children. Diwurruwurru-jaru won a national award for
this work from Speech Australia, the national association of speech
pathologists, in 1997. Examples of student research & work experience: * Adam Saulwick (University of Melbourne): PhD research.
Rembarrnga. Recording and transcribing stories, assisting with school
language programs at Bulman school, producing language learning videos
for children. |
